Why stay here

Placed in the heart of 400 acre parkland, surrounded by open space, fresh air and mature woodland, our site at Balbirnie Park makes a fantastic outdoor playground for energetic adventurers. Whether you cycle, swim, climb or just love to get muddy, Fife’s the place to be.

We sit alongside the Lomond Hills which are the best for hiking and taking in the stunning views. Beach holidays in Scotland? You can do this too! We are a 25 minute drive from the natural bay of Leven which has sandy shores that continue on to Elie, and St Monans.

For shops, cafes, amenities and transport links, Markinch village is a 20 minute walk away.

Family days out

Leven is our nearest Beach, under 25 minutes away by car. The long stretch of sandy shore has amusement arcades and cafes up on the promenade. Drive on half hour further to the Secret Bunker – journey down passageways 100 feet below ground to find out what’s hidden there.

Over in Cupar, head to Cairnie Fruit Farm & Mega Maze to pick your own fruit and veg, explore the maze and try your hand on their karting track. Alternatively, visit The Scottish Deer Centre where you’ll learn all about the species of deer living there and let the kids loose in the tree top walkways, sandpit, zip slide and indoor adventure play area.

Visit us in early June and you may notice a buzz in the air, as Markinch and Glenrothes host their highland games at John Dalton Park – it’s definitely worth checking it out.

Cycling

Our open, hilly terrain combined with pockets of woodland is a mountain biker’s dream. To start, try the Glenrothes Circular, starting at Balbirnie Street car park. A selection of suggested routes that travel further afield are listed on Developing Mounting Biking in Scotland. Route 1 (Dover to Shetland) is our nearest National Cycle Network route – view Sustrans map.

For repairs, maintenance and a shop, visit Bikeworks in Fife. They’ll get you moving in no time.

Walking

We’re surrounded by farmland, lochs and woods so it’s easy to find routes to explore. You can’t miss the East and West Lomond hills beside us - a great starting point with trails for all abilities.

A coastal path runs through Kirkcaldy to St. Andrews or alternatively visit the Vane Farm RSPB Nature Reserve to explore the Vane Hill or wander along the wetlands dotted with bird hides.

Things to try

Spend an afternoon in a hilarious game of bubble soccer – perfect if you’re a big group. Just 15 minutes away by car is Cluny Activities which offers a range of activities like foot golf, segways, clay pigeon shooting, archery, crazy golf, zip wires and an outdoor adventure playground.

In Cupar saddle up for some horse riding across country parkland or on rainy days, take your pick from swimming, bowling, ice skating or go-karting all within a half hour drive.

After all that excitement, head to the Eden Mill Distillery in Guardbridge, for a site tour and a gin, whisky or beer tasting session.

Pubs and restaurants

A 3 minute walk outside the campsite is the Balbirnie Bistro and the Orangery Restaurant offering a broad choice of home cooked food that doesn’t break the bank.

Pubs are scattered in every direction of Balbirnie Park - some are cash only so don’t forget your loose change. The Plough Inn is a welcoming pub with a pool table and a comforting fire in winter. The Dixon Arms is great for hearty pub classics like an all-day breakfast and steak and ale pie.
