The local area is easily explored by bike, and you can pick up National Cycle Route 1 from right outside the site. Whilst the route as a whole runs from Dover to the Shetland Isles, the section from Hunmanby to Whitby (32 miles) is a largely coastal route running via Scarborough. Take on the whole route if you're feeling adventurous.

Nearby Filey is another easy route from Cayton, though not recommended for children or more inexperienced cyclists, as the cycle paths run quite close to main roads.

  • Walking Walking
Cayton Bay is nestled in an area of unspoilt natural beauty and so is an ideal base from which to explore the Yorkshire Coast on foot. The beach at Cayton Bay itself is great for walking, but if you want to explore a little further afield, Cayton Village is perfectly located for visiting the North Yorkshire Moors. Travel to Scarborough then take the Cinder Track as far north as you like.

For something a bit different, head to the tea room and gardens at the Stained Glass Centre for afternoon tea or a light lunch, and take a stained glass or jewellery making course whilst you're there.

The Farrier is just around the corner from site and offers a tasty menu plus a lively gin bar, as well as a fantastic Sunday roast. Similarly, the Copper Horse in Seamer has a vast menu and a range of gluten-free options.

For fresh, local produce, visit Palm Court. Set in beautiful hotel grounds, this dining experience calls for a special occasion.

The beach at Cayton Bay is perfect for families and is great for fossil hunters looking to explore, with fossils to find from over 150 million years ago. Less than 10 minutes from site is Playdale Farm Park where you can get to know the animals, go on a tractor ride or explore the adventure trail.

Nearby Scarborough also has plenty of activities suitable for the whole family. Visit the Sea Life Sanctuary or soak up some history at Scarborough Castle, home to stunning panoramic views of the Yorkshire coastline. Waterpark Alpamare Scarborough is perfect for all the family with four state-of-the-art slides, a wave pool and garden. If you're up for some friendly competition, try the bowling alley at Olympia Scarborough, also home to an arcade and children’s play area.
