Forget Paris – the UK has its own stunning destinations that are perfect for a dreamy weekend away, and some of them could be right on your doorstep.
The Lake District is arguably the most romantic destination in England, especially if you love the great outdoors. Watching the sun set over the serene water beats a fancy restaurant or the lights of a city – for one thing, it’s more intimate. Take a bottle of bubbly down to Coniston Water and enjoy the sky as it comes alive with pink and orange hues. You can indulge in a spot of stargazing afterwards – but be sure to wrap up warm.
You’ll have to venture a little further afield for this one, but the trip is certainly worthwhile. The Isle of Skye is bursting with beautiful scenery and remote corners – mid February is a great time to go too, since there are fewer tourists. The Fairy Pools are gorgeous blue pools with small waterfalls, and are the ideal place for a romantic stroll.
If you live in London, finding a remote spot is near impossible. But head to Kew Gardens and you’ll escape the crowds and get some time alone. Wander hand-in-hand among the ancient trees of the arboretum or leave the cold at the door of the Palm House, an indoor tropical haven filled with exotic plants.
The Cotswolds are full of picturesque villages, each of which has its own charm. Walk down streets lined with honey-coloured stone buildings, stop for a coffee in a cosy café of go for a bike ride along the River Windrush. Bourton-on-the-Water and Naunton are among the prettiest places to visit this Valentine’s Day.
If you’re in Wales for Valentine’s Day, there are few spots more romantic than Llanddwyn Island. Named for St Dwynwen, the patron saint of lovers, it’s a remote and breath-taking place of craggy rocks and sandy beaches. Wrap up and go for a windswept stroll – on a clear day you can even see Snowdonia – before heading back inland for a warming hot chocolate.
