Activities & experiences nearby

The nearby canal towpaths offer great opportunities to explore the area on two wheels off-road. The nearest National Cycle Network route is route 84 which runs from Chirk Railway Station to Trevor and runs alongside the Shropshire and Union Canal. From Trevor, you can connect to route 85 on the Llangollen Canal at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, with fantastic views over the River Dee. Or if you prefer mountain biking, head for the hills to the north of Llangollen and enjoy the views from Offa’s Dyke.

We have cycling route maps which have been developed with the help of Sustrans as a great way to help you explore the local area on two wheels. They include a detailed map, step-by-step directions and useful route information. Pick one up for free from Reception on site.

Explore Offa’s Dyke Path, there are 177 miles of trails so you can take on as much as you want and even do a different section each day. Also, marked walks along the Ceiriog Valley start from Chirk. The canal towpaths are also ideal for those wanting to walk traffic-free and the towpath code states that pedestrians have priority.

For a great afternoon’s walk, head from Lady Margaret’s Park to the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, following this route from the Caravan and Motorhome Club.

Canoe across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct for the best way to experience this historic landmark, or relax and take a narrowboat. The heritage Llangollen Railway looks out over the breathtaking views of the Dee Valley - look out for special events and afternoon tea services. For an authentic traditional experience, why not take a horse drawn canal boat ride from Llangollen, a leisurely way to see the stunning canalside scenery.

Take a walk to Pistyll Rhaeadr, which at a total of 240ft over three separate stages is the highest waterfall in Wales. Or for a more relaxed outing, sample locally produced gin and liqueurs from The Shropshire Distillery in Ellesmere.

Nestled in the historic centre of Chirk, Castle Bistro Restaurant and Wine Bar has a varied seasonal menu and is about 20 minutes walk from the campsite. Also nearby is Stanton House, a popular local pub with great beer, homemade food and regular live music nights. For country scenery, head a short drive from the site to The Poachers, a dog-friendly traditional pub with a garden and patio that looks out over the Shropshire Union Canal, the perfect spot for a Sunday roast.

The Castle Tandoori offers a selection of freshly cooked dishes using seasonal local ingredients. The modern restaurant has all the classic curries, along with a selection of chef’s specialities available to eat in or to take away.

The whole family will enjoy a day out at Chirk Castle with special history and nature activities and events for children, particularly in the school holidays. Enjoy a picnic on the grounds or treat yourselves to a cup of tea and a slice of cake in the Courtyard Tearoom.

Nearby Tŷ Mawr Country Park in the Vale of Llangollen and the Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty sits under the Cefn Viaduct and offers beautiful scenery. A great place to walk around or sit and relax by the river. Children can meet farm animals such as sheep and pigs, feed the chickens and ducks, or even meet the more exotic llamas and there are play areas for them to enjoy.

Oswestry, a market town since 1262 boasts great indoor and outdoor markets on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and kids of all ages will love exploring the earthworks of the Iron Age hillfort at Old Oswestry. Or visit one of the UK’s favourite Zoos, Chester Zoo which looks after a huge range of animals, from elephants to komodo dragons.
