Camping and glamping in Yorkshire

One of England's most beautiful areas, Yorkshire was sculpted during the Ice Age and has everything from rolling moorland and chalk uplands to low-lying estuaries and farmland. There’s a spectacular coastline too, which stretches from the colourful seaside town of Staithes to the chalk cliffs at Flamborough Head.

The sloping green meadows and heather-clad hills of the North Yorkshire Moors are great for walking, cycling and horse riding. It’s a landscape dotted with sheep and crossed by drystone walls, and you can enjoy magnificent panoramic views at almost every turn. The chalklands of the Yorkshire Wolds are gentler, studded with white stone villages and carpeted in rapeseed and poppies in late spring.

Camping in Yorkshire also gives you access to the area’s two main towns, York and Harrogate. York has a rich history that can be discovered at its many museums and by a ramble along its city walls. There are also lots of adventure parks and farms for younger children to enjoy. Harrogate is a spa town that’s famous for its Turkish baths, pretty gardens and Edwardian buildings.

Rambles and rides

If you’re keen to discover the region’s landscapes on foot, then camping near the North Yorkshire Moors will suit you best. The rolling countryside is ideal for long rambles, taking you up hillsides, along woodland paths and beside winding rivers. A short yet dramatic route is the three-mile trail from Sutton Bank National Park Centre to the White Horse of Kilburn. Climbing the stone steps beside the horse not only reveals its scale, but also rewards you with what James Herriot called “the finest view in England”.

If it's views from the saddle you want, camping in the North Yorkshire Dales puts you within easy reach of a range of cycle routes that cater to both families and mountain bikers. The 8.5-mile circular route from the town of Gargrave is relatively traffic-free and takes in the southern Dales. It’s good for families and less experienced riders, as the climbs are fairly gentle. Mountain bikers, meanwhile, will love the routes from Grassington. Heading over Threshfield Moor, you can climb to Weets Top then take a fun descent down to Hetton, or bike across Malham Moor on grassy tracks and purpose-built trails.

Ancient heritage

Yorkshire has an ancient and fascinating past, and staying at one of the Experience Freedom campsites near York gives you the chance to discover it. Interactive attractions such as the Jorvik Viking Centre engage the whole family, giving everyone a unique opportunity to see artefacts and learn about life over 1,000 years ago. Touch screen displays and a ride introduce the Viking world in an interesting way, helping children to understand who the Vikings were and how they settled in Britain.

Sites such as Bolton Castle are great to explore too. Visitors can experience the sights, sounds and smells of Medieval England here, with falconry displays, archery demonstrations, wild boar and hands-on crafts. Kids can complete activity books and find their way through the maze, while adults will appreciate the well-preserved rooms such as the kitchens and Mary Queen of Scots’ bedroom.

Family thrills

Families looking for a thrill will find plenty to entertain them in Yorkshire. Choosing one of the campsites near Thirsk puts you in easy reach of Lightwater Valley, which has rides to suit all ages. The adventurous can hop on Europe’s longest roller coaster or brave the Eagle’s Claw, while younger thrill-seekers will love the dragon boats and the little dipper. There are even a few water rides, and when you need to re-fuel, you’ll find a good selection of eateries.

If you’re holidaying with toddlers, Piglets Adventure Farm is ideal for mixing play and animal encounters. As well as being able to meet pigs, ponies, goats and chickens, little ones can jump about on the bouncing pillows, have a tractor ride, hit the pedal go-kart track and play in the giant sand pit.
