If you’re keen to discover the region’s landscapes on foot, then camping near the North Yorkshire Moors will suit you best. The rolling countryside is ideal for long rambles, taking you up hillsides, along woodland paths and beside winding rivers. A short yet dramatic route is the three-mile trail from Sutton Bank National Park Centre to the White Horse of Kilburn. Climbing the stone steps beside the horse not only reveals its scale, but also rewards you with what James Herriot called “the finest view in England”.
If it's views from the saddle you want, camping in the North Yorkshire Dales puts you within easy reach of a range of cycle routes that cater to both families and mountain bikers. The 8.5-mile circular route from the town of Gargrave is relatively traffic-free and takes in the southern Dales. It’s good for families and less experienced riders, as the climbs are fairly gentle. Mountain bikers, meanwhile, will love the routes from Grassington. Heading over Threshfield Moor, you can climb to Weets Top then take a fun descent down to Hetton, or bike across Malham Moor on grassy tracks and purpose-built trails.
