Leisurely walks
Summer is a wonderful time to walk the Norfolk coast. Crossing saltmarshes and scrubland, the Blakeney to Stiffkey coastal walk rewards you with a beautiful display of flowering sea lavender, which carpets the marshland with purple blooms. It’s an easy, dog-friendly trail that takes around 2.5 hours to complete. Or explore the flat greenery of the Broads, with its network of wide, navigable waterways, which meaner past picturesque villages. Bring your binoculars – this is birdwatching and wild otter country!
On the water
Camping in the Norfolk Broads brings with it the chance to enjoy a boat trip or a spot of fishing too. Much of the Broads isn’t accessible by road, so floating along the tranquil, reed-lined waterways is a fantastic opportunity to spot bitterns, herons and perhaps even the whiskered snout of an otter. You can hire a boat from as little as £30 and spend a couple of hours exploring this spectacular region.
Anglers will find Salhouse Broad well stocked with roach, perch and bream. It’s a great spot for first-time fishermen, offering plenty of mid-sized fish after mid-June. Barton Turf is also an excellent free fishing spot, where you can hope to catch pike, perch and rudd. You’ll be especially successful in winter, although there is good fishing here year-round.
Family attractions
If you’re camping in Norfolk with the family, Norfolk has numerous attractions to keep the kids entertained. Amazona Zoo in Cromer and Banham Zoo near Thetford give children the chance to meet all sorts of animals, from big cats and primates to birds and reptiles. Or for a woodland adventure, they whole family will be enchanted by BeWILDerwood, a magical forest which can be explored via jungle bridges, zip wires and tree-lined paths. The kids can have a go at face painting and den building, and the daring can attempt to find their way through the maze. There are plenty of places among the trees to stop for a picnic too.
Norwich itself also has plenty to occupy all ages. It’s a small but lively, university town with an interesting past and some excellent pubs and eateries. Stroll the cobbled streets with their shops and boutiques, where you’ll find clothes, jewellery and more. Seek out historic pubs serving craft beers and fruit wines, the oldest of which is the medieval Adam and Eve in Bishopsgate. Or discover the Norman castle – now a museum and art gallery. Interactive displays engage younger children, while adults will learn about Norwich’s colourful and eventful past.
